BIOGRAPHY

Emilie is an emerging Canadian artist born in 1987 in Quebec. As far as she can remember, she loves arts and colors. Her mother, who is also an artist, gave her first brushes when she was young. Emilie began her artistic activities more seriously in 2020, with the arrival of the pandemic where she found herself alone with her dreams due to confinement for developing her skills. Before becoming a fine painter, Emilie worked in the world of beauty and she practiced for 17 years the profession of make-up artist.

"I already had a marked attraction for playing with color combinations and for working with brushes."

She also holds training in graphic designer which she acquired after her secondary, but she will never work there concretely. After that, she went to Cegep without finding anything that interested her after 2 completed sessions and that she did her formation in cosmetology. After a long break from studying, the artist decides to strengthen her knowledge and gain additional professional qualifications by enrolling at University in visual arts. She completes her studies part-time while working full-time as an artist.

Emy also worked a few years before her two Childs as a waitress in the heart of Old Quebec where she will always remember all the colleagues, clients and friends she met. Nightlife is an experience that we underestimates a lot and who I have learning a lot on a social and human level.

"To finish on me, 2020 will have been a turning point in my life and this  year was decisive, a new adventure began and I resumed my dreams where I had left off. I throw myself headfirst into the unknown with a tremendous sense of accomplishment following me with every small victory I achieve.

ARTISTIC APPROACH

Emilie works her paintings in successive layers. She mainly paints in acrylic, mixing dripping, knife technique and brush in her work. She loves working with epoxy resin, using different materials like Swarovski crystals.

Her first love at first sight is with the abstract expressionist style, but she discovered in 2022, an artistic turning point which will make her discover a new style which composes with her love for the abstract and her interest for the human being. Gosselin seeks to represent the complexity of the human being and the constant struggle between individuality and social pressure. Her paintings of women with stone half-masks symbolize the facade we show to the world, the part of ourselves that we choose to put forward to conform to societal norms. By hiding part of the face, her invite the viewer to look beyond this facade and discover the true personality of my subjects.

"I believe that each individual is unique and has an inner richness that deserves to be explored and shared beyond the consumer society of artificial social norms. My works are an invitation to discover this uniqueness and to embrace our true nature, the one that is often hidden behind a social mask. I want to inspire people and myself to be courageous and to show themselves as they really are, rather than conforming to restrictive standards which create more than ever problems of anxiety, depression, and several mental disorders.

I just want that when people look at one of my works, the remember that they are unique."
